The last event in the International Year of Mountains 2002 was the Bishkek Global Mountain Summit. What was the International Year of Mountains 2002? The General Assembly of the United Nations on 11/10/1998 approved the Republic of Kyrgyzstan’s proposition to classify the year of 2002 as the International Year of Mountains (IYM). The charge of the IYM was “the conservation and sustainable development of mountain regions, thereby ensuring the well-being of mountain and lowland communities.” The goal of bringing together the aggregate knowledge of many people on a global and local scale was achieved during this event. The ideal result of this Summit was to create an outline for achievement which included requesting the United Nations create a resolution on sustainable mountain development. Also there are plans to set up an association of Mountain Developing States (MODS). |
